Pre-Game Report: Empty Space Explorers

The Empty Space Explorers Board Game

Empty Space Explorers’ eponymous game is about to go live on Kickstarter and I think you should check it out, especially if you have kids in the house that are even remotely interested in space exploration. This game has been in development for a few years, and has been designed and play tested by the Collins family, which is a pretty cool origin story. But more importantly than that, the concept stems from them playing the Settlers of Catan Seafarers expansion, which is the best expansion by far. Anything conceived while playing that game has got to be worth looking at.

The game play seems simple (see below), but there is an endless number of ways to set it up. This makes each new game interesting. Based on other reviews, it looks like game play will be about 45 minutes. Plus there is a solo game play mode. Overall, I think Empty Space Explorers has put together a nice game that is family friendly, has a strong theme to it, and can be learned in a matter of minutes.

Our Prediction:

If this doesn’t get funded, it will be a miracle. The game has a decent amount of press and marketing behind it. The goal is extremely low and the price for the “value” version of the game is under $20. While the campaign looks like it will have a few stretch goals, I’d like to see some more options there. The ones listed are ok. But I’d like to see some seriously upgraded components there and specific amounts for the goals. But I’m only saying that because I think this game will go well beyond the funding goal. I’m hoping the Empty Space Explorers have some ideas on how to turn that excess cash into a better game. This is definitely a game we’ll be watching, and hopefully playing with friends and family in the very near future!

We’ll check back once this goes live and update this page with a link to the Empty Space Explorers Board Game Kickstarter.

EDIT: The campaign is live and already fully funded.
