Psi Wars: A Mind-Bending Game of Strategy by Psi Wars
Psi Wars is a small 2-player card game where you battle your opponent in a Magic: the Gathering style of PvP strategy. It is set in the 37th century and with humanity all but eliminated you play as a Galactic Warlord with cybernetic, psionic, and mundane physical powers. The art immediately drew me in. The play style is also reminiscent of Magic. Where it appears to differ—and where I like it—is that the decks and expansions aren’t random. I appreciate the business model of a collectible card game but I have little to no interest in the hunt for amazing cards and like to just open up a deck and start playing with what I’ve got.
Dark Trails RPG by Stiff Whiskers Press
The Wild West, devils, Lovecraft, and roleplaying games…what’s a better combination for a good time? This RPG is compatible with Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG (DCC RPG) so if you’re familiar with that system you won’t need to learn a new one. If you aren’t familiar, it’s essentially a streamlined 3E. But don’t despair if you aren’t familiar! Dark Trails is the first 3rd-party release to include the rules for the DCC RPG system. This means you do not need another book to play. Finally! A compelling RPG that is all contained in a single volume that actually borrows its mechanics from a previously existing system.
Back Dark Trails RPG. Put the spaghetti in your western!
Era of Tribes by Black Beacon Games
I’m sorry. Did you say this is an asymmetric worker placement civilization style game? Count me in! I love games where you can choose to get along with your neighbors. Or not! Maybe I want to focus more on economy this time. Or maybe I want to adopt a scorched earth policy and destroy everything I can (it’s so cathartic!). For a heavier game, $59 is a reasonable price if you don’t see a need for more than 4 players. Speaking of player count…I love that you can play this one solo. It’s been important to me lately.
You can go all out with the Emperor’s Edition (if that edition unlocks) for about $98. I don’t know that it would make you a better player though.
